Read moreZenergi was founded in 2003 by Kevan and Rachel Walsh, who had held senior roles in the energy industry and identified an opportunity to simplify energy procurement for customers. They had a clear vision for the business: to be different from other brokers and consultants, and to be customer-focussed at all times.
Kevan said, “The world of energy is frantic. Zenergi’s ethos was to bring a sense of calm and peacefulness to what could be a difficult process to navigate.”
The business was started with 201 schools and word quickly spread. Schools which were procuring their energy via local authority frameworks had little visibility of their energy costs, making it difficult to budget. Zenergi offered a clear and simple alternative, and increasing numbers of schools turned to Zenergi seeking greater flexibility, with a wider choice of suppliers and terms, and visibility of the costs of the energy they were contracting.
As the number of customers grew, so did the team and the product offering, developing into a fully outsourced energy department for clients including; bill validation, supplier query and resolution, and consumption monitoring and energy-saving advice.
Zenergi established the first energy and water scheme of its kind with the National Association of School Business Managers. This then evolved into today’s energy framework administered for the association, which is now the Institute of School Business Leaders (ISBL). A partnership with the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL) and engagement with the Department for Education (DfE) followed, establishing Zenergi’s position as a leading energy consultancy for the education sector. Education reform in the shape of Academies and then Multi-Academy Trusts, brought more customers to Zenergi. School Business Managers recognised the opportunity that working with Zenergi could have in protecting their budget and delivering a better service.
As Zenergi continued to grow – doubling in size in five years, and witnessing 20-30% year-on-year growth from 2010 – word of mouth brought new customers from different sectors and private equity investment to support growth and investment in systems, people, and technology.
The acquisition of SB Energy was followed shortly by Briar Consulting Engineers, establishing an in-house technical services department to offer energy compliance and energy and carbon reduction services.
Additional acquisitions of businesses that share Zenergi’s commitment to customer service came in the form of Power Direct Ltd; Apollo Energy; DB Group (Europe) and Powerful Allies, expanding both the service offering and the sectors served.
